On behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) anticipates negotiating one or more license agreements with U.S. companies interested in commercializing a patended devise capable of selectively sensing the presence of a gas. Researchers at NREL have developed a fiber-optic gas detector based on a reversible chemical reaction between a thin film sensor at the distal end of an optical fiber and a reflected light detector at the proximal end of the optical fiber. The fiber-optic gas sensor has advantages of removing all of the electronics from the vicinity of the gas sensing -- an important advantage when the gas environment may be corrosive or explosive and/or when the signal must be transmitted to the detector through an area having potential for electromagnetic interference. The gas detector is presently configured to detect hydrogen in air, but can be used to detect other gases depending on the sensor materials chosen. The potential applications for thepresent configuration of the detector include detection of hydrogen gas leaks in hydrogen-fueled vehicles, chemical process plants, refineries, etc., and hydrogen buildup in battery housings, waste chemical depositories, etc. The device should be simple to manufacture, compact, low cost, and reliable. Contact David Christensen, NREL Technology Transfer, 303.275.3015 (phone) or 'David_Christensen@nrel.gov' (e-mail)if you are interested in pursuing a licensing agreement for this patented device.
