COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JULY 20,1998 PSA#2140U.S. Geological Survey, Branch Of Acquisition and Federal Assistance,
Box 25046, Denver Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225-0046 67 -- REQUEST FOR INFORMATION FOR SOURCES FOR SCANNING EQUIPMENT POC
Jane L. Conniff, Contracting Officer, (303) 236-5900 x334 (MS 204B)
This is not an announcement of solicitation. This is a Request for
Information. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)is currently
investigating methods for converting all of the USGS topographic map
separates into raster digital format and therefore is requesting
information on commercial, off-the-shelf scanning hardware and software
packages that will allow the conversion of map negative, positive, and
separate features to raster data files. Specific requirements for the
system are as follows: 1) The ability to scan a minimum size of 24 X
30 inches, .007 inch think, screened negative or positive, or scribe
separate in under ten minutes; 2) Capture sufficient detail, 1000 dpi
optical resolution minimum, to enable the reproduction of map features
that meet USGS map symbology standards; 3) Output format is monochrome
and industry standard (e.g. TIFF G4 or .rle); 4) Capture map features
directly from the negatives, positives, or scribed separates without
making an intermediate copy -- this may require a design that transmits
light through the map source to a sensing device on the other side; 5)
Maintain positional accuracy throughout the scanned data to within
.004 inch, and be 6) an NT/PC based system. Desirable features for the
system include: 1) The capability to maintain registration between
negative, positive, or separate scans, and 2) The capability to scan
map negatives and separates up to 40 X 72 inches. All responsible
parties are encouraged to respond in writing. All responses should
contain sufficient technical documentation and descriptive literature
to sufficiently describe any scanning system that meets the
requirements listed above. Technical and commercial pricing information
in response to the above description is being requested from private
industry in as much detail as organizations are willing to provide.
Respondees may also be asked to provide sample scans from media
provided by the USGS. Proprietary data that contains restrictions on
its release should not be submitted. No formal solicitation or contract
will result from this synopsis for industry information; any subsequent
solicitation will be synopsized prior to its release. Information
responding to this request should be received within thiry (30) days
from publication of this notice. Submit responses to Mark Barnes, U.S.
Geological Survey, 1400 Independence, Mail Stop 606, Rolla, MO, 65401.
