Contracts Office, Contract@nist.gov. The National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) has a requirement for a high vacuum
laboratory furnace system to be used for routine operation on the
backscattering neutron spectrometer at NIST's Center for Neutron
Research. The furnace is required to be made of an aluminum alloy,
highly transparent to 2 meV neutrons, designed for use under high
vacuum (10-6 mbar) and capable of operating at temperatures of at least
1000 degrees C. Long term temperature stability shall not exceed 0.5%
of the actual temperature. All internal components in the neutron beam
are required to be made of thin niobium foils, including the heating
element. The furnace is required to allow samples to be top loaded, be
height adjustable, and be able to rotate 360 degrees. The thermal
gradients across a cylindrical sample may not exceed 1% of the actual
temperature in either the vertical or radial direction. The furnace
temperature control unit is required to be fully controllable via a
standard computer interface, and equipped with a self adjustment PID
algorithm. The furnace is required to fit inside an existing insert in
the spectrometer vacuum chamber and be compatible with other existing
furnaces at NIST. Complete specifications shall be issued with the
