National Monument management team needs information on the year-round
movement patterns of migratory elk that winter within the Park
boundaries, as well as, lands administered by other agencies adjacent
to the Monument. To gain the necessary information, elk must be trapped
and fitted with radio collars and then released. All collared elk will
then be tracked using radio telemetry. The objectives of this project
include (1)live trap elk deploying methods that minimize stress and
pain, (2) collect blood samples, (3) collect antler samples, (4)
extract one tooth from each elk, (5)deploy a radio equipped collar to
each trapped elk, (6) release each animal without injury to the elk or
the handlers. For additional information see numbered Notes 1 and 26.
