"DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DOD) TO HELP FUND REGIONAL SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH (SBIR) CONFERENCES. (For further information, call 561/791-0720.) The DoD SBIR program funds $550 million per year in R&D projects at small technology companies. In order to encourage participation in the SBIR program by companies located in areas of the country that are under-represented in SBIR proposals and/or awards, DoD has allocated funds to help support up to 5 state or regional SBIR conferences in such areas over the coming year (8/98 through 8/99). DoD's role will be limited to providing administrative support for the conferences and to helping recruit speakers from DoD and the other federal agencies;primary management and funding for the conference will need to be provided by the conference sponsor. Organizations that are interested in sponsoring a state or regional SBIR conference over the coming year with DoD assistance should send DoD a short proposal (two pages maximum) by email (david@foresnt.com) or fax (561/791-0098) by August 15, 1998. Proposals will be evaluated by DoD staff based on (1) the likelihood of the effort to encourage participation in SBIR by companies in areas of the country that do not receive many SBIR awards; and (2) the quality and extent of the resources provided by the conference sponsor. Special consideration will be given to proposals that involve Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and/or Minority Institutions (MIs).
