Jones, Contract Specialist (202) 366-4255 The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plans to negotiate with Loudon Quarry to provide fill materials consisting of road base, (VA specification 21-A crushed diabase), 3/4 inch crushed stone and gabion rock for an embankment bridge abutment project. The fill shall be delivered at a specified moisture content and delivery shall be available upon request. Loudon Quarry is the preferred source for the road base material because FHWA has conducted numerous earlier research experiments with the fill material. The earlier experiments will be correlated to this to this project. Any other sources who wish to respond must have a comparable well graded gravel material. Another source must submit a material report including a sieve analysis and other pertinent physical properties. The material must be certified A-1a or GW-GM according to AASHTO M-15 or ASTM D2487 specifications or Va DOT 21-A specifications. In order to determine if a sample is compatible for this study a pick up truck full of fill material must be submitted along with information on the Quarry quality control procedures and delivery protocol and schedule.
