COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 25,1998 PSA#21662ND ANNUAL DOD MAINTENANCE SYMPOSIUM & EXHIBITION, EVENT #974, OCTOBER
18 -- 21, 1998, FT. WORTH, TX A Rapidly Changing Logistics Support
Environment is Focus of 1998 DoD Maintenance Symposium & Exhibition The
National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) is proud to support
"Maintenance: Today's Challenges Tomorrow's Vision," the 1998
Department of Defense Maintenance Symposium and Exhibition, October
18-21, at the Fort Worth Convention Center, Ft. Worth, Texas. This
symposium is the single opportunity for the entire maintenance
community to come together to share information in preparation for the
rapidly changing world of logistics. It is designed to help
participants understand the role of maintenance in the overall context
of the current logistics transformation. The agenda includes
open-forum discussions among senior DoD maintenance managers, with
ample opportunities for questions and interaction. "Today's Challenges"
are best summed up in the focus of the Defense Reform Initiative. This
initiative will aggressively apply to DoD those business practices
that American industry has successfully used to become leaner and more
flexible in order to remain competitive. The resulting savings will
help fund the "Revolution in Military Affairs," including the
development and procurement of a new generation of information-based
weapons systems needed to ensure American military superiority in the
next millennium. "Tomorrow's Vision" will be extensively addressed in
consonance with the four major areas of the Defense Reform Initiative.
Reengineering, including best business practices, will be the focus of
the Breakout Group on Reducing Response Times. Another breakout group
will look at the efficiencies associated with Advanced Maintenance
Technologies. The second major area, consolidation to remove
redundancy, will be viewed from the perspective of Regional Maintenance
in the Navy. The third major area, competition, will be the focus of
two breakout groups: one on Competitive Sourcing, and one on Lessons
Learned from Recent Privatization Efforts. The fourth major area of the
Defense Reform Initiativeis elimination of unneeded infrastructure.
This will be addressed by the breakout group discussing the Defense
Science Board Summer Study. Among the speakers are:  Mr. Roger
Kallock, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Logistics)  Dr.
Jacques Gansler, Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition & Technology)
 Mr. James Restelli, Vice President, Aerospace Support, Boeing
 LTG John M. McDuffie, Director for Logistics, The Joint Staff
Maintenance facility tours are optional events on the schedule and

Base Facility at Alliance Airport  Lockheed Martin Technical
Air Systems at Air Force Plant #4  Naval Air Station-NAS Joint
