COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF SEPTEMBER 3,1998 PSA#2173U.S. Department of Energy, Savannah River Operations Office, Contracts
Management Division, P.O. Box A, Aiken, South Carolina 29802 A -- COMPOSITE MATERIAL FOR ABSORBING HYDROGEN FROM MIXED GAS STREAMS
POC Douglas Rabold, Telephone 803-725-4185 E-MAIL: Click here to
contact Doug Rabold via e-mail, douglas.rabold@srs.gov. This is a
notice issued by Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC), management
and operating contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy at the
Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina. The purpose of
this notice is to determine interest in partnering on the development
and application of the "Composite Material for Absorbing Hydrogen from
Mixed Gas Streams." This partnering may be in the form of a license,
a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, a joint proposal for
government-sponsored funding opportunities, or other appropriate
arrangements. The technology is a composite material and a method of
using it to efficiently extract high quality hydrogen from mixed gas
streams. The composite material consists of a metal hydride
encapsulated in a low-density silica matrix. The material is designed
to achieve a porosity that excludes gases such as carbon dioxide and
hydrogen sulfide, which typically poison metal hydride based systems.
By using metal hydride particles 50 microns or less in size in
combination with the silica matrix, the composite material can undergo
many cycles of hydrogen absorption and desorption without breaking
down, thereby extending its useful lifetime. The method involves
cooling and heating the composite material to absorb and desorb
hydrogen in a batch process. The composite material and method result
in producing a stream of recovered hydrogen at a pressure of 1 atm or
greater and a purity that is greater than 99 percent. Interested
parties will be provided with a technical brief and instructions on
applying for a license to this technology as well as information on
other partnering arrangements. A typical license agreement will contain
license fees and running royalties. Responses to this notice are
requested by September 30, 1998. Please contact Douglas Rabold by
telephone at 803-725-4185; by facsimile at 803-725-4988; by e-mail at
douglas.rabold@srs.gov; or by regular mail at Westinghouse Savannah
River Company, Attn: Douglas Rabold, Building 773-41A, Aiken, SC 29808.
