rcerbone@cfa.harvard.edu The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory
requires five (5) ellipsoidal solid aluminum mirrors, of a type
designated M4 for SAO's submillimeter-wave feed optics for the
Submillimeter Array Antennas. Summary properties of M4 are as follows:
Overall dimension: 175mm x 155mm x 30mm; Focal lengths: F1=4230mm,
F2=334.3mm; and Angle of incidence at vertex: 24.93 degrees. Surface
specifications are as follows: Surface Accuracy (absolute): 3 microns
RMS over entire surface, 1 micron RMS over the central region as
indicated on the drawing to be provided. Surface Finish: Sufficiently
specular to permit optical alignment. Less than 0.1% of surface area to
be affected by voids or scratches. Coating: Surface protected by SiO
overcoat approximately 0.1 microns thick, or a suitable alternative
proposed by the manufactuer. Quotes must include a detailed description
of the process which will be used to achieve the above tolerances.
Verification of the surface RMS, and of the orientation of the surface
relative to the fiducial tooling balls incorporated into the mirror
block, shall be performed on a coordinate measuring machine. The
surface measurement shall employ a rectangular grid of measurement
points with a pitch no greater than 3mm. To ensure stability of the
mirror surface over time, the vendor may choose an aluminum alloy and
heat treatment sequence known to achieve satisfactory results with the
vendors's fabrication process. This solicitation is unrestricted. All
responsible sources may submit a quotation which will be considered.
Quotations will be evaluated on price, contractor's past performance,
delivery schedule, and contractor's technical description of the
processes which will be used to achieve the above tolerances and
stability of the mirror surface over time. Contractor's may request
solicitation and drawing via fax to Rena Cerbone 617/495-7485 or mail
to Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, 60 Garden Street, Mail Stop
22, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138-1516, Attn: Rena Cerbone. The
applicable SIC Code is 3827, size standard of 500 employees. This
acquisition is being conducted under Simplified Acquisition Procedures
(SAP). Posted 09/03/98 (I-SN245674). (0246) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0475 19980908\99-0002.SOL)
