COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF SEPTEMBER 22,1998 PSA#2185U.S. Department of Energy, Ohio Field Office, P.O. Box 3020,
Miamisburg, Ohio 45343-3020 A -- INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR TRITIUM D&D DUE 103098 POC Donald
Krause, (937) 865-4501. The Department of Energy, Ohio Field Office is
publicizing this for their prime contractor, Babcock and Wilcox of
Ohio (BWO), P.O. Box 3030, Miamisburg, Ohio 45343. BWO is seeking
innovative or improved technologies that are available for
demonstration on the Tritium Deactivation, Decontamination and
Decommissioning Project at the Mound Plant, a DOE contractor site in
Miamisburg, OH. Former tritium operations facilities at Mound are being
decontaminated and in some cases demolished or made available for
possible commercial enterprises. These facilities include multiple
laboratories with gloveboxes, piping, and other process equipment. The
DOE D&D Focus Area is funding a Large Scale Demonstration and
Deployment Project at Mound as part of a national effort to identify,
demonstrate and deploy technologies that will allow the D&D of DOE
surplus facilities more quickly at less cost and more protective of
personnel and the environment. Candidate technologies should be fully
developed and ready for large scale demonstration. Technologies that
are selected for demonstration will be applied in an actual D&D setting
where performance and cost data can be collected and measured against
a baseline technology. Reports will be written and distributed and the
deployment of successful technologies will be encouraged. Some
demonstration cost sharing by the technology vendors should be
anticipated. Areas of interest include characterization and monitoring,
decontamination, dismantlement, waste stabilization and packaging, and
personal protective equipment. Of particular interest are technologies
that facilitate the handling of solid metal tritides. These materials
present a variety of characterization, monitoring and handling
challenges largely independent of the more common gas and water forms.
Innovative technologies, applications or methods that improve on the
baseline of extensive filtering, sampling, characterization analysis
and preventative respiratory protection are sought. This project will
consider technologies that have been demonstrated in the commercial
nuclear industry or other non-nuclear business sectors outside of the
DOE complex. Vendors of technologies that have been demonstrated at
other DOE sites should describe how the Mound Tritium Project would
present a unique application of the technology not heretofore
demonstrated or deployed within the DOE community. Interested parties
should submit a summary description of no more than ten pages that
clearly identifies the proposed application and why this technology
would provide an advantage over existing baseline technologies.
Appropriate performance and cost data from bench scale operations are
desirable. Posted 09/18/98 (M-SN251659). (0261) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0010 19980922\A-0010.SOL)
