36 -- COUNTERFEIT DETERRENT TECHNOLOGIES!! POC Loretta R. Hawley, (202) 874-3143 The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is seeking technologies to deter the use of color scanning equipment, digital image processing software, and color output devices, such as inkjet printers, in counterfeiting U.S. currency. These technologies should comprehensively prevent digital systems and/or devices from being used in counterfeiting in the following ways: 1) Currency Recognition: Any digital imaging must include the broadest possible currency recognition systems, including but not limited to recognition of U.S. currency now being issued; 2) Intervention Responses: Any attempts to print copies of images recognized as U.S. currency must result in some type of intervention, such as a corruption of the output image, to prevent the printing of the illegal images; 3) Tracing: Any color printer must include a tracing system that encodes system identification in any output. This will tie the output to the originating equipment so that forensic identification of the equipment is possible in the event of illegal printing of currency images due to failure or circumvention of the recognition system(s) and/or intervention responses. The Bureau will use this information for the purpose of developing counterfeit deterrence strategies. All information submitted would be held in strict confidence by the Government. Companies with technical information or potential solutions, for currency recognition and intervention upon output, and/or forensic identification of output device should contact Loretta R. Hawley in the Office of Procurement, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, at 202-874-3143, or via e-mail at loretta.hawley@bep.treas.gov. Please provide the following information: 1) Name; 2) Company name, address, contact point (phone, fax, e-mail); 3) Company product(s); 4) Description of the technology solution offered. In the description, please provide some detail, including point of implementation (operating system, application, and device). Posted 09/22/98 (W-SN252792). (0265)
