U.S.Army Space and Missile Defense Command, ATTN: SMDC-CM-CN, PO Box 1500, Huntsville, AL 35807-3801/106 Wynn Drive, Huntsville, AL 35805-1990

A -- SHORT RANGE MISSILE DEFENSE WITH OPTIMIZED RADAR DISTRIBUTION (SWORD) TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATION (TD) POC Astrid C. Lahiere, Contract Specialist/Linda N. Bentley, Contracting Officer, SMDC-CM-CN/(256)955-1187 The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command intends to enter into a non-competitive contract with Technovative Applications, a small business, to design and fabricate a prototype command guidance hit-to-kill weapon system which consists of a radio frequency (RF) command guided missile interceptor and interferometric fire control radar. This will constitute a demonstration and assessment of the Short Range Missile Defense With Optimized Radar Distribution (SWORD) prototype systems' ability to perform one-on-one, autonomous hit-to-kill intercepts of low radar cross section threats that stress current military capabilities. The objective of the contract will be to further exploit the interferometric fire control approach developed under a prior contract through further design, development, and the conduct of integrated system tests demonstrating the maturity of the technology. In performing the prior contract, Technovative Applications established the technical feasibility of the concept through design, breadboard fabrication, and critical components tests, including miniaturization of a flight unit component. It has been determined that these efforts would have to be repeated by any other source at considerable cost to the Government not recoverable through competition. The highest level of classification pertinent to this effort is SECRET/NOFORN. Under authority of FAR 6.302-1(a)(2)(iii), intended service is Technovative Applications, 2821 Saturn Street, Suite A, Brea, California 92821. This acquisition is not open to allied participation at the prime or subcontractor level. See Note 22. Posted 09/22/98 (I-SN252462). (0265)
