rcerbone@cfa.harvard.edu The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory
(SAO) requires the fabrication of a concave Zerodur mirror to be used
in a large optical spectrograph. The mirror is spherical, 23.1 inches
in diameter and has an edge thickness of 2.93 inches. The focal length
of the mirror is 54.0 inches. The required surface accuracy of the
mirror is lambda/8 and surface cosmetics are scratch-dig 40-20 or
better. Quotes must include a summary that documents that each
specification in the drawing has been met. The measurement accuracy of
each test shall be sufficient in each case so that if measurement
error is added to the test result, the SAO specifications are still
met. Measurement error shall be indicated. SAO specifies that maximum
allowable error in two cases: 1) measurements of the radii of curvature
of the optical surface shall be accurate to 0.01% of the target value
or better and 2) measurements of the diameters of the elements shall be
accurate to 0.001% inch or better. Quoters shall describe all metrology
that will be used to verify compliance with these specifications,
including surface roughness and surface accuracy. This solicitation is
unrestricted. (The applicable SIC code is 3827, size standard of 500
employees.) All responsible qualifying sources may submit a quotation,
which will be considered. Such quotations must be supported by
information to enable SAO to evaluate offer's capability to provide
this item. Quoters may request solicitation package via fax to Rena
Cerbone at 617-495-7485 or mail to Smithsonian Astrophysical
Observatory, 60 Garden Street, M/S 22, Cambridge, Massachusetts
02138-1516 Attn: Rena Cerbone. Delivery is eight (8) months after
receipt of order. Quotations will be evaluated as follows: 1) evidence
of technical expertise and infrastructure to fabricate large optic to
SAO's technical specification, 2) Contractor's prior experience and
past performance with optics of comparable size and tolerance
perimeters; 3) price, and 4) delivery schedule. This acquisition is
being conducted under theguidelines as set forth in the Simplified
Acquistion Procedures (SAP). Posted 09/30/98 (I-SN256499). (0273) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0226 19981002\99-0002.SOL)
