A -- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY IS SEEKING ONE OR MORE INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS TO COMMERCIALIZE A NEW HAND-HELD DENTAL IMAGING DEVICE SOL CBD98-007 POC Not applicable Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking one or more industrial partners to commercialize a new hand-held dental imaging device.This new optical technology will allow dentists to non-invasively image the internal structure of soft and hard dental tissue. The technology uses Optical Coherence Tomography to generate high-resolution (<20 micron) cross-sectional images of tissue, without the need for tissue biopsy. This optical technology has several important advantages over conventional x-ray imaging: 1) a factor of ten higher spatial resolution; 2) the ability to image soft (gums) and hard (enamel and dentin) tissue; 3) safe optical imaging, no ionizing radiation is used; and 4) immediate digital image, no need for film and chemicals. LLNL's existing systems can penetrate an image up to 3 mm (0.12") into dental tissue with spatial resolutions of 12 m (0.0005"). In collaboration with LLNL, dentists at research laboratories are currently evaluating these systems. Initial trials have identified several potential applications for this technology which include: 1) early detection of caries; 2) diagnosis of periodontal disease; and 3) evaluation of dental restorations.
