COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF OCTOBER 22,1998 PSA#2206DIRECTED ENERGY SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCEMENT The Air Force Research
Laboratory (AFRL) and the New Mexico Professional Aerospace
Contractors' Association (PACA) are sponsoring a Directed Energy
Symposium at the AFRL Phillips Research Site on 5-6 November 1998.
Senior managers will address the programmatic and technical state of
Directed Energy programs and technology in DOD. The Symposium is
divided into a DOD SECRET session on the afternoon of 5 Nov and an
unclassified, For Official Use Only session on 6 Nov. The planned
schedule includes: Dr Hans Mark, Director of Defense Research and
Engineering, Keynote Speaker Dr. Delores Etter, Deputy Undersecretary
of Defense for Science and Technology General Ron Fogleman, USAF (Ret);
Presentation on the status of the AFRL Directed Energy Applications in
Tactical Airborne Combat (DE ATAC) study General "Pete" Piotrowski,
USAF (Ret); Presentation on the results to date of the AFRL Lasers and
Space Optical Systems Study (LASSOS)Program managers will present
updates on DOD High Energy Laser programs including: Air Force's
Airborne Laser (ABL) Space-Based Laser (SBL)Army's Tactical High Energy
Laser (THEL) BMDO, Navy, and AFRL presentations will cover technology
development and dual-use technology efforts. The DE ATAC study
presentation by General Fogleman will be in the 5 November classified
session. An unclassified summary of this study will also be presented
on 6 November. The symposium will be held in the Space Science Center,
Building 201, on Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM. Check-in
for the classified session will begin at 1200 on 5 Nov and the
presentation will begin at 1300. Check-in for the 6 Nov session will
begin at 0730 and the first presentation will start at 0800. Conference
information for the 6 Nov session will be For Official Use Only (FOUO)
and attendance is limited to government and government contractor
personnel working in the Directed Energy field and supporting areas.

Advance check-in for the 6 Nov session will be held 1500-1700 at the
Space Science Center and at a reception 1700 -- 2000 at the Wyndham
Hotel at the Albuquerque airport, 2910 Yale Blvd SE. Kirtland gate
passes for 6 Nov will be available at advance check-in. All conference
attendees are invited to attend the reception 1700 -- 2000 at the
Wyndham Hotel, whether or not you need to check in. REGISTRATION: The
$50 symposium registration fee covers a CD-ROM copy of the unclassified
presentations, a continental breakfast, snacks, and lunch. Registration
applications must arrive not later than 30 October 1998. Checks should
be payable to "PACA" and sent to AFRL DE/VS Protocol Office, 3550
Aberdeen Ave SE, Kirtland AFB, NM 87117-5776. For confirmation of
registration, include your e-mail address or telephone number on the
registration form. Attendance is limited to 300 persons. Limited
registration may be available on the day of the symposium for a late
