B -- SPECIAL STUDIES AND ANALYSIS -- NOT R&D DUE 121598 POC James L. Hendrix, Optical Systems Engineer, 925-422-7172 WEB: http://lasers.llnl.gov/lasers/nif.html, http://lasers.llnl.gov/lasers/nif/optics-summit. E-MAIL: Click here to contact the engineer via e-mail, hendrix5@llnl.gov. The University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), seeks sources for nearly 25,000 coated optical elements to be used in the National Ignition Facility. These elements are all less than 200-mm in diameter with most being less than 100-mm in diameter. These optical elements require laser damage thresholds in the range of 1 to 25 J/cm2 for 1053-nm, 3-ns pulses; and in the range of 1 to 10 J/cm2 for 351-nm, 3-ns pulses (not on the same optic). This request solicits potential suppliers to respond with a request for detailed specifications and a letter documenting their interest and capabilities relative to optical coatings More information concerning the National Ignition facility and the requirement for small optics can be found on the internet at: http://lasers.llnl.gov/lasers/nif/optics-summit/ or also linked from the internal to LLNL NIF page (below): http://lasers.llnl.gov/lasers/nif.html This request represents a change in approach from that previously anticipated due to funding constraints. Potential suppliers must complete a vendor survey form (available from the contact listed above) and submit coating samples to the requirements supplied by LLNL (on request). Coatings not made to these specifications will not be tested. Suppliers may submit samples for any or all of the coatings requested. LLNL will supply laser damage threshold data to the supplier and the supplier will be put into a category of qualification based on those results. LLNL will subsequently supply substrates to vendors whose initial samples perform at or near the highest levels of LDT required NIF Small Optics. These samples will be used for a second round of coating and testing. Samples which are tested will not be returned by LLNL to the suppliers. Preference will be given to suppliers that provide samples early due to time and funding constraints, samples may be returned to potential suppliers with out testing at the discretion of LLNL. The specifications for the coating samples may be obtained from the contact listed above. Generically, these coatings are broken into three main categories: 1) Antireflection coatings (AR) which are nominally <0.1% reflective, 2) highly reflective coatings (HR) which are nominally >99.75% reflective at 45 degrees angle of incidence in the "P" polarization, and 3) polarizer coatings which have a very high extinction ration between "S" and "P" polarization. The AR and HR coatings are required for both 1053-nm and 351-nm optics. The coatings are to be on 50-mm diameter fused silica (Corning 7980 or equivalent) substrates with less than 4 angstrom surface roughness rms with the exception of the polarizer coatings which are to be on rectangular substrates specified in a drawing that will be provided upon request. Samples supplied must be serialized with a number obtained from LLNL. Prospective sources shall identify which coatings they are interested in and request the detailed coating specifications and substrate drawings. Subsequently, prospective sources shall supply coating samples, one sample per coating type that the potential supplier desires to be qualified to manufacture to LLNL for testing. Prospective sources should have proper equipment and personnel experienced in coating design and fabrication. Interested firms should respond with a description of qualifications with respect to the foregoing or related fields. In addition, vendors should supply documents showing previous laser damage threshold certification results if available. Facsimile and electronic mail responses will be accepted. This notice is to assist the University in determining the potential for competition; no solicitation is currently available. Posted 10/26/98 (W-SN265459). (0299)
