81 -- STORAGE PACKAGING FOR NUCLEAR MATERIAL DUE 111798 POC Wayne Bryan, Contract Specialist, (510) 637-1712 The U. S. Department of Energy is requesting expressions of interest and capability from potential suppliers of metal storage packages that will be used to contain plutonium metals and stabilized plutonium oxides for long-term storage. Cans comprising each storage package are intended for use in an automated packaging machine. The cans are nested together to form a storage package. Material is placed inside a convenience can, which is then lidded. The convenience can is placed inside an inner can. A hollow plug is then inserted into the inner can and welded in place. The excess material is cut off. The base of the hollow plug forms the inner can lid. Finally the inner can is placed inside the outer can and a lid is fitted and welded to the can to produce a three-can storage package. The dimensions of the outer can are 254 mm in length and 125 mm in diameter. The cans are to be made from stainless steel and the outer container shall comply with ASME, Section VIII, Division 1 requirements. An estimated 10,000 storage packages are to be manufactured and the procurement will be phased over three years. In response to this request potential sources should provide the following information: 1) Company experience with similar types of fabrication and high precision machining; 2) Ability to meet the quality assurance requirements of NQA-1 Basic 1-18 points; and 3) Adequacy of equipment and facilities to support this project.
