Dell Hledik, Contracting Officer, (760) 939-3772 The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, China Lake, CA, intends to procure from Raytheon Systems Co., Lexington, MA, 02421, on an other than full and open competition basis, continued development of optical quality diamond windows with options for related research topics. The basic program will optimize the diamond deposition and polishing process to make rectangular windows with dimensions of 1 inch x 5 inches x 1.5 mm thick with minimal optical scatter. The options for related research tasks include (1) developing circular diamond windows for microwave tubes; (2) measuring the resistance of diamond windows to thermal degradation; (3) developing polishing techniques to improve the optical figure of flat diamond windows; (4) measuring the optical distortions in a diamond window under rapid heating conditions; and (5) measuring the mechanical strength of diamond grown in the same manner as large diamond windows.
