E-MAIL: Pamela Shauger, pshauger@pica.army.mil. The Office of the
ProductManager for Mortars is seeking sources to perform x-ray
inspection, assembly and packaging of 81mm mortar ammunition with
Composition B High Explosive. There are approximately 65,000 rounds
that require inspection. Approximately one third of them are assembled
with fuze and propulsion system. The inspection system must be able to
reliably screen out rounds with defects such as cavities in the
explosive with a projected length of 1/32 inch; base separation between
explosive and interior surface of the shell body of 0.015 inch; and
cracks in the shell body. The unassembled bodies that pass inspection
will then need to be assembled and packed into complete rounds. The
assembled rounds have a hazard classification of 1.1. Information is
requested on advanced x-ray inspection equipment that can reliably
screen out rounds that do not meet the stringent defect criteria.
Information on conventional wet plate x-ray equipment is already
available and not required for this market survey. Include a
description of the advanced x-ray system and the anticipated rate
(hours/day) of inspection. Explain whether or not the inspection system
can also check for the presence of energetic components (eg.
propellant) in the assembled round. Identify if the company is a large
or small business and state whether or not the facility can safety
accommodate this amount of explosive material during the inspection,
assembly and packing operations. Your submission should include your
organization's name, address, point of contact, phone number and a list
of prior contract references with phone numbers. Responses should be
sent to Louis Sylvain, at no cost to the Government, within fifteen
days of this publication. THIS IS A SOURCES SOUGHT NOTICE FOR PLANNING
PURPOSES ONLY AND IS NOT INTENDED FOR PROPOSAL PURPOSES. Posted
