It is believed that Jackson Laboratory is the sole source for this requirement because AFRRI investigators have established baseline research data using animals of the same strain. These animals must be from the same colony to preclude genetic variations affecting research data. If another source were used to acquire animals for this research, all previously collected data would be invalid and it would be necessary to duplicate all previous research, thus necessitating inappropriate utilization of greater numbers of animals.
