A -- SAPPHIRE THERMAL SHOCK RESISTANCE IMPROVEMENT SOL N68936-99-R-0019 DUE 112198 POC Brenda McQuiston, Contract Specialist, (760) 939-7535 The Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, China Lake, CA intends to procure on an other than full and open competition basis, with Crystal Systems, Inc. continued development for producing strengthened, optical quality sapphire by magnesium oxide infusion with options for related research. The proposed contract will study the effects of temperature, time and atmosphere on the diffusion of MgO into sapphire. Compression strength will be measured at 20 degrees C and 600 degrees C to optimize the process. Options provide for 1)characterization of the strength, thermal shock resistance, and thermal conductivity of sapphire treated by the optimum method from the basic program 2) fabrication of five optically polished sapphire domes. The contract period of performance will be for an estimated 36 months, including options.
