A -- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY (LLNL) SEEKING INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS TO COMMERCIALIZE NANOSTRUCTURE MULTILAYER CAPACITORS (NMCS) SOL CBD99-005 DUE 122898 POC n/a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking one or more industrial tooling manufacturer partners to commercialize LLNL's technology for manufacturing nanostructure multilayer capacitors (NMCs). LLNL's patented reactive sputtering process produces high-performance dielectrics with low microcontamination at high deposition rates. Alternating layers of metal and dielectric are deposited to form a compact, solid-state capacitor structure. A wide range of dielectric materials may be deposited to optimize performance (i.e., breakdown voltage, dielectric constant, and leakage current). An automated cluster tool with advanced PVD heads is projected for high-volume manufacture of capacitors. Multiple tools would be deployed in a cleanroom facility typical of a semiconductor fab. An immediate application is the fabrication of high energy density capacitors for commercial and military applications such as power electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and computers. Development of this technology was supported by the DOE. LLNL funding is not available to fund any corporate effort. The partnership will be coordinated through the LLNL Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization Office using a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA).
