Additional information regarding HERMES may be obtained,
http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/Technology/techno-license.html. The
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the
University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE), is seeking collaborators in the commercialization and
further development of HERMES. HERMES is a mobile inspection system for
the nondestructive testing (NDT) and evaluation (NDE) of bridge decks.
HERMES uses an array of 64 low power ultra-wideband (UWB) radars and
imaging reconstruction algorithms to produce three dimensional images
of the interior of a bridge deck. The first HERMES field prototype has
been successfully demonstrated at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour,
with no interference in traffic flow. HERMES bridge deck data can
quickly reveal hidden anomalies embedded in the concrete, not otherwise
observable without the timely and costly destruction of the bridge
deck. HERMES was recognized by R&D Magazine as one of the 100 most
important inventions of 1998. Collaborators are sought with technical
and scientific expertise in the area of bridge deck analysis/repair,
low power ultra-wideband radar, and/or packaging of radar with data
acquisition and reduction systems. Collaborators must be willing to
commit significant resources and funding to this project. Collaborators
may include state, federal, or local governmental agencies, businesses,
or universities. Mechanisms for collaborations may include licensing,
work for others, or Cooperative Research and Development Agreements
(CRADAs). Any collaboration must include a significant funds-in
component to LLNL for the development of pre-production prototypes to
be successfully considered. LLNL has extensive scientific and
intellectual property background, including patents, on this project.
Additional information regarding HERMES may be obtained at
http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/Technology/techno-license.html To ensure
consideration, interested parties must respond in writing to LLNL by
January 7, 1999 and provide the following information: (1) the name and
address of your organization, (2) the name, address, telephone number,
and fax number of a point of contact, (3) the business, product, and
financial history of your organization, (4) a description of your
organization's expertise and facilities in the areas of bridge deck
analysis and/or repair, low power ultra-wideband radar, and/or
packaging of radar with data acquisition systems, (5) organizational
history of research and development funding, and (6) the resources your
organization could commit to this project. Statements of interest
should be sent to: Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization Office
