Program Management Course (APMC) (PMT 302) 99-1 Defense Systems

April 1999 Openings remain available for INDUSTRY STUDENT attendance
to the 14 week Advanced Program Management Course (APMC) at the Defense
Systems Management College on a tuition free basis. This notice is for
potential students currently employed in non-government firms only.
APMC provides a comprehensive examination of the integrated processes
used in defense systems acquisition management for selected mid-career
military officers and government civilians assigned to a defense
systems acquisition management career field and to Industry
Program/Project Managers workingi defense programs. Enrollment is
targeted at promising candidates for senior positions in program
management later in their careers and who now hold, or are selected to
hold, intermediate management positions in programs offices,
functional offices supporting program offices, or higher echelon
offices supervising program management. The curricula give students an
opportunity to develop a broad knowledge and understanding of defense
systems acquisition management through : (1) education in functional
areas necessary for effective operation of a program office; (2)
management simulation exercises involving principal events and
considerations encountered throughout the life cycle of a defense
systems acquisition program; (3) case studies featuring lessons learned
from real-life programs; (4) interaction with current program managers
both Defense and Industry; and (5) analyses of current Office of the
Secretary of Defense and Service policies and strategies in defense
systems acquisition management, augmented by presentations from senior
Defense and Industry officials. Previous attendees have described the
program as the DoD Executive MBA program. The APMC provides broad
knowledge and acquisition management perspective. Students develop
process skills and competencies for effective program management in
parallel with improving their acquisition knowledge. Experienced
faculty, guest lecturers, and fellow students probe "best practices",
while covering pitfalls and challenges of lessons learned. The course
has been approved for graduate credits by the American Council on
