HIGH CAPACITY CARBON FOR LI RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES Sandia National Laboratories has worked on the development of advanced carbon materials for rechargeable batteries, which improve performance and cycle life. Specifically, carbon anodes have become the material of choice for lithium ion rechargeable batteries since they have improved safety and performance compared to lithium metal anodes. Sandia National Laboratories has developed and exploited capability in tailoring carbon materials for electrochemical applications, including an understanding of fundamental physical and chemical phenomena that dictate the performance of anode materials. Materials R & D at Sandia National Laboratories is world-class utilizing unique analytical methods (e.g., NMR and in-situ XRD) that allow evaluation of materials interactions and phenomena in battery systems. Important applications include: The rechargeable battery industry for portable electronics in the US is projected to be $8B/year by 2000 (up from $6B in 1997). Any rechargeable battery manufacturer and selected chemical or materials manufacturers that plan to supply materials to the battery industry would benefit from Sandia National Laboratories' experience in advanced carbon materials. Potential Benefits Better battery performance in regards to higher energy density, higher rate capabilities and longer run times. Demonstrated Achievements We have demonstrated very high capacity carbon material development -- up to 600 mAh/gram under certain charging conditions. Follow-up This proprietary Sandia capability may be applied to solve challenging problems in the field of polymer and other organic sciences. Sandia has the flexibility to form specific teams of technical experts from any or all of the above capabilities to focus expertise on specific technical challenges. We are interested in making this technology available to companies responsive to partnering with Sandia to develop near/term and/or future applications via licensing or cooperative development agreements.
