Institute is soliciting proposals for an epidemiologic study of the
prevalence, genetic and environmental determinants, and potential
clinical, personal, and societal impact of iron overload and hereditary
hemochromatosis, in a multi-center, multiethnic, primary care-based
sample of 100,000 adults. This information will be used to determine
the feasibility and potential individual and public health benefits and
risks of primary care-based screening and intervention for iron
overload and hereditary hemochromatosis. The period of performance is
for five years beginning on or about September 30, 1999. The study will
consist of a Coordinating Center, 5-7 Field Centers and a Central
Laboratory. This announcement invites all responsible sources
interested in performing as the Coordinating Center for this study
(RFP: NHLBI-HC-99-03) to submit a proposal which shall be considered by
the agency. This is not the Request for Proposal (RFP); the Request for
Proposal (RFP) must be downloaded from the NIH Web Site, which will be
available on or about December 28, 1998, at the following Internet
