amaden=40wmata.com. The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority
(WMATA) is soliciting = expressions of interest from qualified
organizations for a Comprehensive = Radio System. The Authority desires
to purchase a trunked radio system. = Initial users will be the
Authority*s police and bus operations; rail and = maintenance
operations will be included later. The system envisioned will = permit
95% coverage and 95% message reliability within the service area =
that encompasses all WMATA rail routes, police and bus service areas =
within the WMATA service area consisting of the District of Columbia;
= Montgomery and Prince Georges* Counties (MD); and, Arlington and
Fairfax = Counties and a portion of Loudon County (VA) and the City of
Alexandria = (VA). A *Best Value* negotiated procurement approach is
anticipated. = Rail service involves both above and below ground
operations over a 103 = mile system (approximately 51 miles below
ground). The WMATA Police = patrol all tunnels, stations and their
entrances, platforms and, mezzanines=, plus, the above ground service
areas identified above. Bus operations = involve surface service in the
above referenced areas. WMATA has = exclusive licenses for 17 490 MHZ
channels that are available for the new = communications system. A
digital trunked system is envisioned in which = the various WMATA user
groups can share a base infrastructure. Approximate= ly 55 mobile
radios with mobile digital terminals, 350 portable radios and = 5
dispatch consoles are included for police use. Approximately 1,600 =
mobile and 100 portable radios, plus 6 dispatcher consoles are planned
for = bus operations. This will be Phase 1 of the project. By 2005,
rail and = maintenance operations will be brought into the system. Rail
operations = has a requirement for approximately 1,000 mobile and 300
portable radios; = maintenance operations will need approximately 300
portable units. The = procurement of the rail and maintenance radios
may be an option in the = procurement. WMATA plans to seek Board
approval in January 1999, and = issue the Request for Proposals several
months later. Qualified organizati= ons are invited to submit an
expression of interest with their qualificatio= ns for inclusion on the
