tyndal.lindler@oak.doe.gov, tyndal.lindler@oak.doe.gov. The Department
of Energy, Oakland Operations Office, intends to award a contract on
a sole-source basis to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT)Plasma Science and Fusion Center for the further development of
on-board plasmsatron fuel reformers for transportation applications.
MIT has patented this device, which can produce hydrogen from a variety
of hydrocarbon fuels without the use of a catalyst. The hydrogen can be
reinjected into an engine to reduce emissions and/or improve energy
efficiency. MIT will fabricate two of the plasmatrons for engine
testing at DOE laboratories, and work to optimize their performance.
This project is a continuation of work currently performed under a
subcontract through the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental
Laboratory (INEEL). See Numbered Note 26 Posted 12/21/98 (W-SN282248).
