The objectives of this project are to establish, operate, and maintain
rodent production colonies under strict barrier conditions to product
50 to 350 animals of each sex of F344 rats and B6C3F1 hybrid mice and
other strains per week for a total of approximately 40,000 rodents per
year. The Government may require production of other species/strains of
rodents as needed without increasing the total number of animals
produced. The rats and mice to be produced shall share identical
microflora; therefore, both species may be produced in the same barrier
unit. However, to facilitate production of peaks, two barriers
production units/rooms may be used. Each barrier production unit shall
have both species but one unit shall be stocked to produce peaks of
rats and the second for peaks of mice. Having two production units for
the standard species/strains will provide back up in the event of
contamination or ventilation systems failure of one unit. The
Contractor shall maintain several isolators and two or more maximum
barrier units or rooms dedicated to this contract. The Contractor shall
have the capability to rederive not only the standard strains F344,
C57BL/6N (e84) and C3H/HeN (e84), but also special strains such as (but
not limited to) transgenic rodents by embryo transfer or Cesarean
section and establish defined (modified Schaedler) microflora-associate
foundation colonies. The contractor shall establish production colonies
of rats by random mating and bybrid mice by mating C57Bl/6N (e84)
females with C3H/Hen (e84) males to produce 50 of each sex of F344 rats
and 150 of each sex of B6C3F1 hybrid mice per week with peaks up to 350
animals of each sex and species at four to eight week intervals as
requested by the Government. The estimated period of performance is
eight (8) years. The Government estimates that this eight year period
may require approximately 121,520 labor hours. This acquisition is a
total small business set aside, the size standard for which is 500
employees. See Numbered Notes 1 and 26.***** Posted 12/30/98
