Announcement, http://www.wrs.afrl.af.mil/contract/. Air Force Research
Laboratory, (AFRL/ PRSF) solicits research proposals for High Heat
Sink Fuel System. The purpose of this solicitation is to seek
proposals, which address the high heat sink and thermal stability of
jet fuels (JP-8+225, JP-900, endothermic, and chemically reacting) in
aircraft components and propulsion system hardware. In addition, the
objective of this program is to demonstrate the advantages of these
fuels in terms of enhanced propulsion system design and reduced life
cycle costs. Air vehicles require large fuel heat sink capabilities for
cooling airframe and engine components. In particular, for gas turbine
engines, it is planned to demonstrate JP-based high heat sink fuel
with goals of 500 BTU/lbm, 400 hour on-wing maintenance interval, 2000
hour system life, and +20% heat duty/weight over baseline. For
scramjet/combined cycle engines for weapon systems such as hypersonic
reconnaissance/strike vehicles, it is planned to demonstrate high heat
sink fuel with goals of 1500 BTU/lbm, greater than 15 minute system
life, 150 BTU/ft2-second direct cooling and minimal material
degradation from fuel attack at 1800oF. The objective is to maximize
fuel heat sink and fuel system reliability while minimizing maintenance
(coking) using JP-based, more thermally stable fuels (JP-8+225, JP-900,
endothermic, or chemically reacting fuels). These fuels will provide
heat sink increases of 1.2, 4, and 10 fold, respectively, over JP-8.
