ANALYSIS OF DRINKING WATER -- BACKGROUND: The Safe Drinking Water Act
(SDWA) as amended by Congress in 1996 requires EPA to promulgate
national drinking water regulations for contaminants and disinfectant
byproducts. The SDWA requires EPA to use sound science to assure the
protection of human health and to consider the effects of drinking
water contaminants in sensitive subpopulations (e.g., children,
pregnant women, the elderly, different ethic groups, etc) in setting
safety standards. Accurately characterizing the human exposure to
drinking water contaminants and disinfection byproducts is critical in
meeting the goals of the 1996 SDWA. This research effort will test if
NHEXAS drinking water data can be used to improve exposure estimates
and help OW meet these goals. SCOPE OF WORK: The contractor shall
compile the NHEXAS data into a SAS database. The contractor shall group
these data according to OW criteria for drinking water source, age
classification, subpopulation characteristics, geographic locality, and
socioeconomic demographics. The contractor shall analyze these data to
estimate chemical exposures from drinking water and other sources in
these various groups. This includes analysis of individual media to
determine the amount of exposure attributable to these sources and to
multimedia analyses to estimate the aggregate exposure. The contractor
shall construct distributions of chemical exposures for analysis. The
contractor shall analyze the results of individuals in the 90th
percentile group to determine if they display any common
characteristics. DELIVERABLES: Milestone Task Submission Date* 1 Rank
