The NSF has a requirement for support of Ice Drilling Services in support of NSF and other reseacrchers throughout the world's ice sheets and glaciers. The work involves maintaining, operating and/or providing a variety of existing drilling systems, and designing and fabricating or procuring new ice coring/boring systems and equipment as required to meet the needs of new scientific projects if current systems will not meet the requirements. In general, the drills are used to obtain ice cores, bore into ice sheets, embed scientific instrumentation into ice sheets or provide access for in-situ measurements. The number and type of projects will vary from year to year. The contractor will be expected to field and operate coring/boring or down hole sampling systems, and obtain samples or measurements as required by the supported science projects. Field projects are often carried out in remote regions of the world, and in extreme climatic conditions. Logistical support to field sites will be provided to the contractor under separate contract. The contractor will be expected to conduct their own field planning and on-site project management, and an excellent understanding of polar logistics and operations is needed. The contractor will work closely with the scientific community to develop requirements, and within the NSF proposal cycles. A cost reimbursement contract is contemplated with a three (3) year base period and one (1) two (2) year option. Anticipated contract start date is 9/1/99.
