Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate,
(AFRL/MLBC), solicits research proposals for "1000 Degrees Fahrenheit
Carbon-Carbon Material Development". The principal objective of this
effort is to develop an oxidation-protected structural carbon-carbon
(C-C) composite for use in environments experiencing temperatures from
1000 Degrees Fahrenheit to 1500 Degrees Fahrenheit. The unique
properties of C-C provide enabling material solutions for both aircraft
and space launch systems. Applications include heat exchangers, exhaust
wash structural aft decks, internal hot structures, turbine and rocket
engine components, and thermal protection surfaces. C-C begins to
oxidize in air at approximately 750 Degrees Fahrenheit, and as a result
its material properties, such as strength and thermal conductivity,
degrade. Previous oxidation protection research efforts concentrated on
higher temperatures (2600 Degrees Fahrenheit and higher) resulting in
protection schemes that are not effective for lower temperature use.
This effort concentrates on these lower temperatures and the associated
applications. The intended result of the effort is to demonstrate
oxidation protection and long term survivability in the 1000 Degrees
Fahrenheit to 1500 Degrees Fahrenheit temperatures range for selected
applications while maintaining structural and thermal performance.
