an artist or artists to create two paired murals to commemorate the
150th anniversary of the founding of the Department in 1849. The
Department of the Interior Building, located in Washington, D.C. has a
long, celebrated tradition of murals that were created during the
1930s and 1940s to illustrate mission-related themes. Some of the
existing murals may be viewed on the Department web page. The URL is
http://www.doi.gov/musuem/mural.html. The theme for the 150th
anniversary has been designated as "Guardians of the Past, Stewards for
the Future." The resulting murals should incorporate this theme. It is
the Department of the Interior's intention to commission this artwork
using a two-phase approach. the first phase will encompass a
down-select process. Using slides of past work, artists will be
nominated through a cooperative procedure involving GSA, the project
architect, art professionals and community advisors, to receive
contracts for conceptual design and drawings. The second phase will
involve evaluation of the drawings and a final commission for the
project will be awarded. At the stage in the commissioning process, you
must have all of the following necessary materials to the Department of
the Interior by February 22, 1999 in compliance with the RFP: 1) a
letter of interest, 2) a resume, and 3) up to twenty (20) 35mm slides
of past work created within the last 7 years. Slides should be
submitted in a plastic slide sheet, with each slide marked with your
name, date and title of the work and its dimensions. Slides will not be
returned, and 4)offerors are requested to submit written information
regarding the market value of at least three (3) works of art sold
within the past seven (7) years. Information should include sales or
commission cost, title of work, date of sale, media, materials,
