MODIFICATION/NOTICE:: HELMET, LIGHTWEIGHT MARINE CORPS. The U.S. Army
Materiel Command Acquisition Center, on behalf of the U.S. Marine
Corps, previously published an announcement on about 25 November 1998,
regarding the Marine Corps' requirement for Lightweight Helmets.
Subsequent to this announcement the Office of the Secretary of Defense
notified the Natick Contracting Division of the U.S. Army Materiel
Command Acquisition Center that the Secretary of Defense was
CONSIDERING whether or not to make a formal determination that would
allow the use of foreign-source (Qualifying Country) Para-Aramid Fibers
and Yarns in end items being procured by the Department of Defense.
Such a determination would be made pursuant to Section 807 of the Strom
Thurmond National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999 (P.L.
105-261). For more information regarding the POSSIBLE SecDef
determination, see Federal Register Volume 64, No. 10, dated Friday,
January 15, 1999. PLEASE NOTE THAT, AS OF THE DATE OF THIS
ANNOUNCEMENT, THE DETERMINATION HAS NOT BEEN MADE. This
modification/notice is published to bring the determination to the
attention of possible foreign sources, and to comply with the
requirements of DFARS 205.203. For additional information regarding the
Marine Corps' requirement for lightweight helmets, see the previous 25
