(703) 492-3341 MARKET RESEARCH: The Direct Reporting Program Manager
(DRPM) for the U.S. Marine Corps Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle
(AAAV) is conducting market research to determine the commercial
availability of a lightweight, durable, shock-absorbing troop seat for
the AAAV. The Marine Corps wants to purchase a sufficient number of
troop seats to carry out validation testing. The troop seats must be
available by 1 March 2000 in order to conduct testing prior to
selection. Seat pan for each occupant shall measure 457 mm (18 in) in
width by 381 mm to 432 mm (15 in to 17 in) in depth. Seat back for each
occupant shall measure 457 mm to 508 mm (18 in to 20 in) in width by
457 mm to 508 mm (18 in to 20 in) in height. Seat back to seat pan
angle shall be between 93-103 degrees. Seat pan angle relative to
horizontal shall be between 5-8 degrees. Maximum backrest angle shall
not be more than 110 degrees from horizontal. Seat shall accommodate
5th to 95th percentile sized Marines in all gear, including Arctic
clothingand NBC MOPP IV gear. Seats shall be free of points that may
pinch or snag personnel clothing or equipment during egress. Seat shall
be resistant to corrosion from salt water and withstand anticipated
abuse; i.e. being stepped on by boots, contact with personal gear,
tools, and weapons, etc. Seat designs shall mitigate the effects of
explosive accelerations and shocks. The AAAV shall provide protection
against incapacitation of the crew and embarked infantry as a result of
a ballistically induced acceleration in the presence of a
non-perforating event. To achieve this level of protection, transfer of
ballistically induced acceleration must be no greater than 150 g's over
2 milliseconds and no greater than 40 g's over 7 milliseconds. The
troop seats must be capable of withstanding the high structural loads
occurring during routine operation of a 76,000 lb tracked vehicle.
