The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Idaho Operations Office (ID), is seeking applications for cost-shared research and development in the area of geothermal energy conversion technology. The research is to be directed toward the domestic use and development of new technologies that enhance the feasibility of generating electrical power from geothermal resources by lowering costs and/or improving performance. Projects are sought in the following areas: Heat exchanger design and operation (especially air-cooled condensers); Non-condensable gas management; Remote, small scale (e.g., <3 Mwe) power generation; Improvements in turbine efficiency and/or reliability; Materials of construction; Corrosion or fouling mitigation; Innovative binary cycle and working fluid technology; Design or retrofit of power plants to accommodate a declining geothermal resource; Microbiological technology; and Two-phase flow management (in equipment or piping). DOE funds will be used only to fund tasks directly related to the research and development of geothermal power plant technology. Tasks that support reservoir technology, exploration, or drilling will not be funded. Applications involving work in foreign countries will not be considered. The awardee is required to provide a minimum of 20% cost-share for the proposed activities. Federal funds presently available for this solicitation are $1,100,000. Additional funds are subject to funding availability. Federal cost share of $200,000 is preferred. DOE anticipates making up to 6 grant/cooperative agreement awards, each with duration of three years or less. For-profit, not-for-profit, state and local governments, Indian Tribes, and institutions of higher education may submit applications in response to this solicitation. The statutory authorities for this program are the Geothermal Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-410) and the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT).
