The Department of Defense is interested in re-establishing an industrial base capability to manufacture adenovirus vaccines. At this time the DoD is compiling a list of pharmaceutical manufacturers that have experience in research and development of pharmaceuticals in general and in virus vaccines specifically, and who may be interested in accepting a transfer of existing technology to manufacture adenovirus vaccines for subsequent purchase by the DoD. Successful production of adenovirus vaccines may require the filing of a product license application or a biologics license application with the Food and Drug Administration. Information provided by interested pharmaceutical manufactures is for preliminary evaluation of options by DoD. If the Government decides to proceed, a follow-on solicitation for detailed technical and cost proposals is anticipated. In 1980 Wyeth received a license from the Food and Drug Administration to manufacture adenovirus vaccines (types 4 and 7). The vaccines produced were live virus, enterically coated, oral tablets. Wyeth, who was the sole source of adenovirus vaccines for the DoD, discontinued manufacturing adenovirus vaccines in 1994. Wyeth is expected to cooperate with the DoD and a new manufacturer in the transfer of existing technology used to produce previous lots of vaccine.
