The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is conducting a survey to
identify potential licensees for marketing, distribution, and/or
follow-on development of the Java-based Remote Document System (RDS)
Version 1.2 software developed by the Environmental Molecular Sciences
Laboratory (EMSL) for the Department of Energy. Written in Java (JDK
Version 1.1.6), RDS runs either within a Web browser or as a standalone
desktop application. RDS is a unique Web-based application that brings
a networked file directory & repository to any Netscape Navigator or
Internet Explorer user, regardless of operating platform. RDS is a
network-centric file storage system that enables users to share
documents and other files over a heterogeneous network, including the
Internet. A full description and demonstration of the RDS software is
available at the Web address below. After logging in as "Guest", a
window appears on the Web browser to display the directory of files and
allows the user to browse and download these files. All of the files
are actually stored on a remote server and can be accessed from
anywhere on the Internet. The RDS software provides the following
functionality for file management: A.) Files can be uploaded from the
user's local machine to the remote server by clicking on the 'Upload'
button. B.) Files can be downloaded to the user's local machine from
the remote server by clicking on the 'Download' button. C.) Files can
be viewed inside the Web browser, using the Quick View feature to
browse the contents of the files without having to download and open
the file. D.) Text documents can be created and edited directly on the
remote server using the built-in version of the Java-based EMSL
Publisher, a word processor developed in conjunction with RDS. In
addition to these basic file management features, RDS enables multiple
authoring of documents over the Web, provides access control
privileges (view, download, edit), uses record locking mechanisms,
provides e-mailing to facilitate collaboration, and has history
tracking. Interested and qualified firms should respond in writing,
emailed, faxed or postmarked no later than March 1st, 1999. Posted
