Jeffrey S. Fleming, jfleming@pica.army.mil. The U.S. Army TACOM-ARDEC,
Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. has a requirement to retrofit and upgrade an
existing dual-torch overly band welding machine. This machine is
capable of welding nickel, stainless steel, and soft iron deposits on
thin wall alloy steel 155mm projectile bodies. The Equipment that is
part of the welding machine includes: a material handling system, a
chucking mechanism, a rotation mechanism, welding torches, welding
power supplies, a oscillating mechanism, wire drives and straighteners,
a shielding gas system, a projectile cooling system, and a ventilation
system. The machine shall incorporate PC off-line weld schedule
planning, PLC machine control, servo motion control, an operator screen
and pendant, and a weld power supply/machine control. The welding
machine shall be capable of gas metal arc welding in the direct
current, reverse and straight polarity mode, pulsing, utilizing
constant current, constant potential, and AC series power. The welding
torches shall be configured such that each is powered by a separate
constant current/constant potential power supply, each having pulsing
capability. Each welding torch shall also be powered by a separate
power supply, capable of GMAW welding in the AC series mode of welding.
This project will be in two phases. Phase I, the contractor shall
prepare a machine design based on the requirements and submit the
design to the government for approval. Phase II the contractor shall
complete the design, build and demonstrate the equipment at the
contractor's facility. After approval, the contractor shall install the
machine at Government site. The period of performance is twenty-four
months. The small business size standard is $5 Million. See note #1.
