Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is conducting a survey to
identify potential licensees for marketing, distribution, and/or
follow-on development of the Java-based Publisher Software (Version
2.0) developed by the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory
(EMSL) for the Department of Energy. The EMSL Publisher is a Java-based
word processor that runs entirely within a standard Netscape Navigator
or Internet Explorer environment, making it platform independent.
There are three components of this software: the Publisher itself, the
Publisher Viewer Applet, and the Publisher Text Engine. EMSL Publisher
This software enables documents to be written, edited and exchanged
freely among a large number of users on different host platforms
including Win95/98/NT, MacOS and UNIX; this allows for local or remote
collaboration on a document across operating systems. In addition to
exchanging Publisher documents, this software also imports and exports
to plain text, to Rich Text Format such as Word or WordPerfect, and to
HTML. The functionality of this word processor includes the importing
of Java Beans as plug-in modules to perform specific tasks. For
example, the demo Web site for the Publisher includes two beans, one to
read in and draw images, and one to read in and display 3D molecules.
The architecture of the Publisher enables any Java Bean to be added and
embedded into a document, allowing extensive customization for a
specific task. EMSL Publisher Viewer Applet The Viewer Applet (Viewer)
is a compact applet that displays formatted rich-text files on a Web
page. It can display Publisher, RTF, HTML and plain text documents, in
all cases presenting the documents in their original format and layout
rather than in the limiting style of HTML. In addition, the same Java
Beans contained in Publisher documents will be accessible inside the
Viewer applet, thus enabling truly media-rich documents to be placed
directly on the Web, with no plug-ins required. For example, a company
could post a Word or WordPerfect document directly onto its Web site,
rather than having to rewrite the document in HTML. This applet can
run independently of the Publisher word processor. EMSL Publisher Text
Engine At the heart of the Publisher and the Viewer Applet lies the
text engine, which is a Java Bean itself, is written in Java JDK 1.1,
requires no additional class or libraries, and has a size of only 200
KB. Included with the text engine are the basic import and export
filters for plain text, RTF, HTML and the Publisher format, plus the
ability to add in other filters as they become available. For example,
the text engine can be readily customized to specific word processing
applications by Java software development companies. A detailed
description and demonstration of the Publisher software is available at
the Web address given below. Interested and qualified firms should
respond in writing, emailed, faxed or postmarked no later than March
5th, 1998. Posted 02/19/99 (W-SN300182). (0050) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0043 19990223\D-0007.SOL)
