58 -- SATELLITE TRANSMITTERS FOR ADULT EMPEROR GEESE SOL 99WRQQ0026 DUE 033199 POC Geri Fiore, 650-329-4179 E-MAIL: gfiore@wr.usgs.gov, gfiore@wr.usgs.gov. The U.S. Geological Survey, Alaska Biological Science Center, requires 15 each Satellite Transmitters for abdominal implantation in Adult Emperor Geese. Weight: <55 grams including container, battery, transmitter, and antenna. Size: encapsulated unit should be <20mm thick, <60mm long, and <40mm wide. Life: at least 48 weeks when programmed as follows: 6 hours on 18 hours off for 83 cycles; 6 hours on 236 hours off for 23 cycles; 6 hours on 42 hours off for 16 cycles. Range: sufficient power to transmit to satellites when implanted in the goose. Antenna: teflon-coated coax cable; outside diameter with shielding = 2.55mm; outside diameter of center conductor with teflon layer = 1.50mm; diameter of multi-strand twisted conductor wire = 0.50mm. The antenna must be a teflon-coated coax cable. The lower 8cm of the antenna is covered with shielding. Shielding is removed above the lower 8cm of the antenna. The center conductor is also coated with teflon and is 1.5mm in diameter (including teflon) and consists of multi-strand twisted wire (0.5mm diameter). Container: the package must be waterproof with no sharp edges. The package will be coated with a silicon rubber material (Dow-Corning medical grade silastic coating QL-2213). Output: 1.) signals will be transmitted every 60 +/- 5 seconds when the transmitter is on. Transmitters will be programmed to remain on for exactly 6 hours when transmitting data. See above for length of time transmitters are to remain off. 2.) each transmitter will need an on/off switch. 3.) Sensor Data: a. temperature of transmitter (body temperature of bird); b. remaining battery potential; c. formatted for 32 8-bit with hexadecimal processing. Frequencies: ID's will be provided by the Alaska Biological Science Center, Wetland and Terrestrial Ecology Branch, as assigned them by ARGOS. Pulse rates: 60 +/- 5 seconds. Posted 02/23/99 (W-SN301244). (0054)
