for small businesses. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is seeking
research support services for the Unified Medical Language System
(UMLS) Metathesaurus. NLM needs assistance in six specific areas: (1)
analysis of the structure and semantics of a variety of biomedical
information sources; (2) refinement of the logic, algorithms, and
software for pre-processing and editing these sources to insert into
the Metathesaurus; (3) lexical and semantic analysis of the
Metathesaurus; (4) refinement of systems to support simultaneous
distributed maintenance of the Metathesaurus and its multiple sources
and production of Metathesaurus editions; (5) development of
algorithms, data structures, software, and procedures that support the
use of the Metathesaurus and related UMLS products in vocabularies and
classifications maintained by U.S. government agencies; and (6)
development of algorithms, data structures, and procedures for
employing the UMLS Metathesaurus to enhance U.S. government health
care, public health, and research information systems. The contractor
will require thorough familiarity with the UMLS Metathesaurus and
expertise in clinical and biomedical sciences, medical informatics,
computer science, library and information science, natural language
processing, and thesaurus construction. The work requires a T1 Internet
connection, computer resources comparable to multiple-cpu Sun server
architecture with at least 75 gigabytes of storage, a Unix operating
system, Perl, Unix tools, Ingres and Oracle RDBMS, and experience in
