MARGARET L. RHINESMITH, mrhines@pica.army.mil. The U.S. Army
TACOM-ARDEC is contemplating a sole source purchase order to Lambda
Research Inc., 5521 Fair Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45227 to provide the
Government with a small scale effort to investigate the effect of
residual stresses on the fragmentation characteristics of the powder
metallurgy tungsten alloy OICW warhead (90% Tungsten, 8% Nickel, 2%
Iron). The contractor shall develop an x-ray diffraction technique for
measurement of residual stresses in the warhead, and measure the
stresses at various locations and through the cross section of current
developmental warheads. The contractor shall develop a finite element
model of the stress state set up by quenching from high temperature.
The contractor shall develop quenching, burnishing and shot peening
techniques to create significant compressive stresses on the warhead's
outer surface, and measure the stress states set up by his techniques.
