Paul Grahovac, pg2@inel.gov. A -- Joining ceramic composite materials.
U. S. Patent 5,139,594. This is a potential technology development and
licensing opportunity with Lockheed Martin Idaho Technologies Company
(LMITCO), the prime operating contractor for the Department of Energy
at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL).
This patent provides market protection for its method of joining
ceramic composite materials such as silicon carbide composites at
temperatures no higher than about 1450 degrees Centigrade. The method
provides a joint which is capable of withstanding the thermal and
mechanical conditions of which the composite material is capable. The
particular benefits of the technology are the low joining temperature
and the joint's ability to match the performance of the composite
material. LMITCO is also seeking to develop related technology as
disclosed below. There is considerable interest in the development of
advanced ceramic fiber/ceramic matrix composites for high temperature
applications. In order to fully realize the potential of these
composites, reliable and practical joining techniques are required that
will permit the use of these materials as complex shaped components or
allow their integration into existing engineering designs. Such joints
require strength and toughness comparable to the joined material under
the temperature and environmental conditions of the projected
application. LMITCO is seeking a written indication of interest from
industry partners interested in funding a collaborative technology
development project and/or entering into a license agreement for the
purpose of developing and commercializing this technology. License
terms will include an up-front licensing fee and a running royalty
based on a percentage of sales. This is not an opportunity to provide
goods or services to LMITCO or the Department of Energy. This Request
for Interest (RFI) will close to response 30 days after publication.
