Lieberman (202) 927-0435 The U.S. Customs Service is seeking commercial
sources to provide a portable hand-held contraband detector. The
detector must use gamma ray backscatter technology with a radioactive
source of Barium 133 (with a half-life of 11 years) not to exceed
10uCi. The depth of scan ranges up to 7 inches. This device will be
used by Customs inspectors in locating hidden contraband inside an
object where the inspector's eye can only see the surface of the
object. It will also aid the Customs inspector in determining that no
contraband is present. The device should include a remote display of
detector readings. All interested parties should submit information
regarding their commercial equipment to the Contracting Officer at the
address shown above not later than April 15, 1999. No telephone
