304/285-5883 The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) is conducting a project that will investigate the underlying
bio-mechanical and physiological mechanisms associated with the
occurrence of musculo-skeletal disease (MSD). The approach will entail
the use of human surrogates (rodents) that will make exertions a
predetermined levels of force, for predetermined durations, at
prescribed work-rest cycles, for varying periods (simulating those
encountered in actual work environments wherein high incidences of MSD
occur). Exertions will entail various movement topographies (e.g.,
those that entail extension, flexion, and torsion that systematically
varied in range of motion). The proposed equipment will allow for the
manipulation and control of the relevant variables of musculo-skeletal
disease in rodents. A prior competitive solicitation was issued in the
CBD on November 20, 1998 and MED Associates Inc. was the successful
offeror. We now need to buy an additional eight chamber package and a
two chamber package which will interface with equipment already
purchased. Because the original equipment purchase was custom
manufactured, and the equipment being purchased at this time must be
compatible, the Government intends to negotiate on a sole source basis
with MED Associates Inc. If there are vendors who feel they have the
capabilities necessary to meet the stated requirements, they are
invited to submit appropriate documentation, literature, brochures and
references which demonstrated their capabilities to Brenda L. Goodwin,
