Wolfe, Jr., 304/285-5883 The National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health (NIOSH) facility in Morgantown, WV has a project requiring
the collection of human metabolic data during the performance of Man
Test 4, a series of exercises used in the certification testing of
self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's). These data will be used as the
basis for a test protocol to be written for the Automated Breathing and
Metabolic Simulator (ABMS) and incorporated into the NIOSH's
congressionally-mandated certification testing program for SCSR's. The
metabolic data collection device must be accurate (plus or minus 0.1
percent oxygen and plus or minus 0.1 percent carbon dioxide), highly
portable, and lightweight (800g; the effect of the weight of the device
on oxygen consumption must be minimal). The only commercially
available, portable metabolic data collection device known to meet
these specifications is the COSMED K4 b2 Pulmonary Gas Exchange System
with Digital Telemetry System. If there are vendors having the
capabilities necessary to meet the stated requirements, including
warranties, they are invited to submit appropriate documentation,
literature, brochures and references to Brenda L. Goodwin, Reference:
