Castle Pass Trail Construction: The job consists of reconstructing 9
switchbacks, rebuilding 4816 feet of 2 foot wide trail, reconstructing
715 feet of 3 foot wide trail, installing 41 waterbars and building
120 square feet of rock retaining wall. This work is on Castle Pass
Trail number 749. The project is located on the Methow Valley Ranger
District. To reach it from Winthrop, go west on Highway 20 to Mazama,
then take County road 1163, which turns into Forest Road 5400 at Lost
River. Follow this road to Harts Pass. There turn to Forest Road
5400600 and go 1/2 mile to the trail head. From here follow the Pacific
Crest Trail for about 28 miles to Castle Pass. Here turn west on the
castle pass trail and go about 7 miles to the east end of the project.
The work is in 4 segments along about 3.5 miles of trail. The project
is within the Pasayten Wilderness and no motorized or mechanized
equipment may be used. Although this contract should be done in 100
days, and a contractor could have it done this fall,the area is high in
elevation and may take two field seasons. We would like to have it
finished by the end of September 2000. Estimated start work is 8/1/99,
esimated dollar value is between $25,000- $100,000. To request a copy
