Sozanski, Tel. 617/495-7376 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires the fabrication and delivery of one large, isolated, optical table which will be part of a large spectrograph housed in a rotating telescope building (MMTO) on Mt. Hopkins in Arizona. The table will be 18 feet long by 5.5 ft wide by 24 inches deep. The table will be constructed with 0.188'' thick Invar skins, necessary for maintaining stability over the operating temperature range of 10 to 90 F, bonded onto an aluminum honeycomb core. No tapped holes are required in the table top. The table will be equipped with a simple airbag vibration isolation system (Contractor provided) that will attenuate transmitted forces by a factor of 10 horizontally and by a factor of 100 vertically from 10 to 100 Hz. Each individual airbag will be located in pockets recessed into the bottom of the table so that the table top will be 26'' high off the floor. In addition, the pockets will be deep enough to avoid high center of mass instability. The table will have a fundamental natural frequency of at least 80 Hz. Weight of the table will not exceed 4300 pounds. Contract award is anticipated to be made in late May 1999, and the desired delivery date is 15 September 1999. The table will be delivered (F.O.B. Destination) to the Whipple Observatory Administrative Complex in Amado, Arizona.
